Their roles are varied: some are simple war-cheetahs, used to harry enemies and scout ahead; others serve as guard-beasts, trained to protect standards and officers; a rare few are fitted with medic’s satchels, racing through fire and smoke to deliver bandages and water to the wounded. Though not considered soldiers in the strictest sense, their presence is a mark of the empire’s reach — proof that even the wild speed of Africa bends to Abyssinian discipline.
